Costa Book Awards

Julian Barnes is only just recovering from celebrating his win of the Man Booker prize, and already he has been announced in the shortlist for the 2011 Costa Book Awards. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy is also in the running for the poetry award, whilst Patrick and Henry Cockburn’s emotional account of living with schizophrenia in Henry’s Demons: Living with Schizophrenia – A Father and Son’s Story has been shortlisted for the biography award.

I’m always most excited by the first novel award, and this year is no different, with two titles catching my eye. The Last Hundred Days by Patrick McGuiness is about an English student battling for survival under the terrifying last days of Ceausescu, and Pao by Kerry Young tells the story of a young Chinese boy growing up inKingston,Jamaica.
